και στην Αθήνα μέσα ζει στη ξενιτιά";
Τίνος την απουσία;

Discordant Muse

What verse on earth
was ever written in joy...

Apparently, the music comes
when chords are cut or broken.
The golden lyre is tuned
in our shabby attic.

Epics of wounded heroes,
their arms are stiff holding
the spear for years,
and now suddenly they yearn
for their velvet slippers.

Performances on stage
under the tragic mask
or under the comic mask alike,
while events have carried through
some kind of adjustment.

What verse on earth
was ever written.

Wishes

This happens to be the last document for 2008 written at the desktop of the Greek Corner at the University of Jordan. It was used as our New Year's Eve decoration.

The air strikes and the blockade
against Gaza
constitute crimes
against Humanity and Civilization

Finally some gestures of affinity, allow a tone of hope: In Amman all celebrations for the New Year were canceled and on December the 30th, there were queues of people offering necessaries (provisions, cloths, medicines) for Gaza.

To 1430...

Κάπου να τρίζει άραγε τη γραφίδα του κάποιος Πίκο ντελλά Μιράντολα ο Νέος με λόγια σαν κι ετούτα;
I once read that Abdala the Muslim, when asked what was most worthy of awe and wonder in this theater of the world, answered, "There is nothing to see more wonderful than man!" Hermes Trismegistus concurs with this opinion: "A great miracle, Asclepius, is man!" However, when I began to consider the reasons for these opinions, all these reasons given for the magnificence of human nature failed to convince me: that man is the intermediary between creatures, close to the gods, master of all the lower creatures, with the sharpness of his senses, the acuity of his reason, and the brilliance of his intelligence the interpreter of nature, the nodal point between eternity and time, and, as the Persians say, the intimate bond or marriage song of the world, just a little lower than angels as David tells us. I concede these are magnificent reasons, but they do not seem to go to the heart of the matter, that is, those reasons which truly claim admiration. For, if these are all the reasons we can come up with, why should we not admire angels more than we do ourselves? After thinking a long time, I have figured out why man is the most fortunate of all creatures and as a result worthy of the highest admiration and earning his rank on the chain of being, a rank to be envied not merely by the beasts but by the stars themselves and by the spiritual natures beyond and above this world. This miracle goes past faith and wonder. And why not? It is for this reason that man is rightfully named a magnificent miracle and a wondrous creation."
Κάποιος που να θέλει να ξανασκεφτεί, λίγο με τις πηγές, λίγο από μόνος, ένα εγκώμιο για τον άνθρωπο; Με τόσον ενθουσιασμό που να σκιάζει την αφέλεια;

An accountant's December

The issue with December is not that it is the elusive month of resolutions and scrutinizing life-accounting, but the fact that it arrives too fast and all the more often. Tsarouhis in this self-portrait, indicates the reasons: it bears the prudent wings of Daedalus.

Chronophage

Homer was said to be blind, therefore he saw much. The fights and the muddy river, the details on Achilles's shield, the rays of the morning sun and the clothes of Athena while approaching. And Stephen Hawking has been bound on his wheel chair for long years, traveling far, in time, space and the realms in between. He is the one who two days ago unveiled the strangest probably timepiece on Earth of our times at the Corpus Christi College in Cambridge. The unconventional clock was given the Greek name Chronophage (the Time Eater- χρόνος + (έ)φαγ-ον) made of stainless steel and plated with 24-carat gold. There are no hands, or digits for the greedy instrument, nor is accuracy its strong feature. It even falls back several seconds to catch up with the "correct" time every five minutes.
Who bears then the accounting burden, if not the ticktock of a clock hand? The hybrid monster which consists of the horrific parts of a grasshopper and a locust. It moves back and forth along the golden surface, on its edge, that reminds the spine of a lizard. Every hour a chain rattles on an invisible coffin, reminding the spectators of mortality. The pendulum sometimes simulates a typical precise motion. On other occasions it stops and it corrects itself, allowing the jaws of the metallic insect to do their part.

Precision, mirage, hypnosis, doubt, the hope for a mistake, a gained second and consequently the adamant return to the counted steps of the locust. A philosophical clock, conceived and financed by Dr John Tylor as a tribute to the one who in 1764 (after forty years of work and calculations) resolved the problem of longitude and made the world map a lucid space, John Harrison this is, a working class man with a passion.

Hardly on time

N. Soulakis

I admire the tidy and productive bloggers, those who regularly contribute their mind-drops, each to his/her/their own direction, poetical, literary, political, philosophical, culinary, commercial, personal, photographic, pragmatic: but all in all persistent. I take my breaks or, rather, I have some writing breaks which interrupt a continent of silence. Summer, for sure, is not my writing break climax. There are several reasons for that: changing country, shifting language- with the adamant obligation to find a new balance,- relocating in a different room and having different typing facilities. Most importantly, changing the set of faces to whom I refer my thoughts and words (not necessarily the ones around me, but those who become distant because of my trip). In absentia most of my conversations occur.
Therefore, here it comes the last day of August, just one day before the beginning of Ramadan, (the moon has disappeared or it is vanishing now, while I am writing these words of apology, the electrical decorations have appeared) and I promise myself once more not to allow such gaps mark their shadows. I want to bribe divine Augustus, something to mention about his glory. How?

Odysseus Elytis may function as the mediator:

August was bathing in the starlight

and his beard was dripping stars and jasmines

August, Μonth and God, to thee we take the oath

to find us next year again on the rock, kissing

To stitch a golden thread from Virgo to Scorpio

and lit a sea cross to your grace

August was bathing in the starlight

and his beard was dripping stars and jasmines (Τα ρω του Έρωτα/ The L of Love)

Papadiamantis also: "And he was not so sad for the separation from his wife- whom, in any case, he was tenderly loving- as much as he was deploring the cruel loss of that young daughter, whom he was only hoping to find anew in the Other World... And his heart was much devouted and sorrowful... And he brought in mind that here, in the past, the christians, especially those who had been crushed like himself, were coming on days like these to this same small church of Virgin Mary the Precla, aspiring to recover by means of continence, prayer and chant some distraction and consolation. In the old days, before 1821, while the deserted and dilapidated nowadays village was still inhabited, all the population of the two parishes was coming to the church of Precla, a mere chapel, to attend the prayer chants, throughout the first half of August...

Strange Portraits- Strange You and Strange Me

Now that Amman hosts a Rembrandt exhibition consisting basically of reproductions of the famous portraitist, my other source of echoes informs me that Diane Arbus's huge archive was donated to the Metropolitan Museum of N.Y. What does huge mean, when the person at stake is a great and suicidal inspired artist? 7,500 films, photographs commented by her before her suicide in 1971, some of her most famous pictures and a value which exceeds the 3.5 millions EU.
Born in 1923, she took the advice of her instructor Lisette Model seriously and she specialized her shots at people who live on the edge of societal acceptance.

People on the streets, in their homes, in the asylum, in temporary paradises of difference (or shall I write it differance now that Derrida is not among us?- parades, soirées, parks and masquerades), twins, dwarfs, manly women, delicate men, giant sons and minimal parents. The documenting and, simultaneously, tenderly humane eye of Arbus resulted in a classic value that the thirty six years and a half which have elapsed since her death did not harm the importance of her work, something rare concerning the art of photography.

She said:"What I'm trying to describe is that it's impossible to get out of your skin into somebody else's... That somebody else's tragedy is not the same as your own."
She also, presumably, said:"A photograph is a secret about a secret. The more it tells you the less you know.", something that may stand valid also in other accounts of life, in other forms of art.
I admire people who have an outlook,
I admire the ones who are geniuses with a cause,
I admire those who show me another world, beyond my hypnotized brains, in front of my lazy eyes.
I admire those who erase by their nails the definitions next to the term "normality".
Will I stick to them for the year to come?
Lucky N.Y. Metropolitan Museum.

Many Happy Returns

These days I am thinking of the petrified girl. That one that saw her sister embarking to the Empire of a Particular Ratio on a commercial vessel, with the required documents of an unholy matrimony. That one that might have paid attention to Makriyannis' feverish oration "for these we fight as well" (for the curved stones) during the 1820s. After 2500 years, they transfered her from the Rock of Acropolis to the nearby New Museum of Acropolis, the one that will be soon having restaurants with a balcony, spicy ticket prices and pale Le-Corbusier-imitating aesthetics. So the group of the girls hopefully will be protected from rain, snow, wind and sun, pollution and the noise of a 5 millions city. They were led, even if late, to the salon, these noble street girls, that saw the growth, the decline, the shrinking, the growth, the pompous baroque of history.

Merry Christmas Heathen Beauty.

Photo Anniversary

How to celebrate one hundred instances, one hundred notes on various doubts, on minimal certainties and on daylights that now overshadow the personal sense of time?
By exposing my fixed idea:

"Do you think I have anything else in mind, except freedom and language?"
Dionysios Solomos
- - - - -

Light saving

Sometimes, many times, everything is about a morning impression. That treasure under your pillow; some treasures are gold, some treasures are sun-dried iris, some are the bitter salts of a poisonous portion. What have you reaped courageous peasant in your basket all night long? I cannot conclude, I cannot argue, I may only guess from the mood, this crystal which bears many fingerprints. I may only guess from the music you ask as a companion for your caffeine remedy.

AND NO MORE SHALL WE PART (Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds)
And no more shall we part
It will no longer be necessary
And no more will I say,
"dear heart"
I am alone and she has left me
And no more shall we part
The contracts are drawn up,
the ring is locked upon the finger
And never again will my letters start
"Sadly", or "in the depths of winter"

And no more shall we part
All the hatchets have been buried now
And all of birds will sing to your beautiful heart
Upon the bough

And no more shall we part
Your chain of command has been silenced now
And all of those birds would've sung to your beautiful heart
Anyhow Lord,
stay by me
Don't go down
I will never be free
If I'm not free now Lord,
stay by me
Don't go down
I never was free
What are you talking about?
For no more shall we part
And no more shall we part

Τι κάθεσαι και λες;

Tonight they moved time one hour ahead. I had completely forgotten about it. Suddenly I was reminded and I went all around the flat pushing time one hour ahead. Many clocks, alarms, my three watches, my mobile. Wondering where this hour has been stored for me, in my life, in the lives of others. And if its refund in October, will be of the same face-value, or whether the Economy of Life will be distorted in inflation rates. It goes arbitrary this Central Institution of Standards.

Telling the truth

It feels nice writing the truth, writing about young people and, with your letter as a key, entering through a side door the adventure of their multiple possibilities/potentials in life, before Adulthood appears with its axe of concessions.

How should one visualize it- Adulthood I mean? It depends on the particular language I presume. In Greek it is feminine "Eνηλικίωση" therefore it could be a Medusa with her untidy hair, the petrifying snakes, holding the sword, ok, but better cutting its victims with the edge of a paper which from its one side (the honey dipped one) contains promises, wages, insurance package, incentives, the scale of salary raise, bonus etc, and from the other side (the genuine one) the respective duties: marital contracts, taxation, fees, minimal photos of friends who have mysteriously vanished before the age of 30, some sundried flowers from vacations far behind in time, adverse historical circumstances.

She is covered with a patchwork cloth, you may assume what bits it contains: mixed technique- pearls, amethysts, pieces of silk with these imaginative indian colours, pieces of bloodstained gauze, again photos, again few verses written on the dress with thread, and black rags, and empty spaces, holes, for the emptiness to appear. Uff now I can see her well. And I believe it is her dress that achieves the stunning effect.

But it is still early, they may find new ways, so many ways, paths, hidden itineraries, personal options, the magic of an unexpected enlightenment, a big revolt agains all odds and expectations. So let me just enjoy for having given out my recommendation letters, in happiness, in real hope, not uttering any kind of lie.
