Κι από τη λογοτεχνία
με φτάνουν υποθέσεις εργασίας που δεν υπόσχονται την αφρόντιστη χαρά να ξεχειλίζει. Είτε από την ποίηση με τις χρησμοδοσίες της είτε από της πεζογραφίας τους χάρτες μαθαίνω ότι έζησε και διαιωνίζεται (άκληρη ως επί το πολύ, μα καρποφόρα) μια ολόκληρη φάρα που η μόνη ιστορία που εμπέδωσε ήταν εκείνη για τους πίθους των Δαναΐδων. Γιατί τι να πω για τα Ελεγεία της Οξώπετρας που εσχάτως μελετώ αποσπασματικά, όσο αντέχω, ή για Τα Σακιά της Ιωάννας Καρυστιάνη ή έστω για τον δήθεν φαρφουρένιο Cheri της Colette που όμως είναι πιο αιχμηρός από ατσάλινες βελόνες του Σέφιλντ; Ότι μου ξανοίγουν την ψυχή; Και μήπως δεν αμφιβάλλω κιόλας τελεσίδικα για το το νόημα της φράσης "μου ανοίγει την ψυχή"; Ισχύει, εντάξει, ισχύει ενίοτε σα δωρεά. Μόνο που ό,τι την ανοίγει απλά ξαναβιδώνει κλειδαριές πιο δύσκολες, σκαρφίζεται κωδικούς ασφαλείας που τους ξεχνώ ευκολότερα.
"Άλλο αν και μελετώντας πάλι βγήκα εκεί που το κολύμπι μ' έβγαζε απ' ανέκαθεν" λέει σόλοικα ο Ελύτης, σοφότερος με το γήρας δίπλα στη φωτιά.
Κι εκεί βαθιά, όπου οι απλωτές του μυαλού με βγάζουν, βρίσκω όχι μόνο το φόβο της σκιάς που γυροφέρνει στους βυθούς, όχι μόνο το εγκώμιο για τη μεγαλοσύνη του νερού. Αλλά και την απόσταση που αφήνει το περιθώριο στη ματιά να παρατηρεί την προοπτική. Ιστορίες των ανθρώπων. Οι πιο μεγάλες ένας ύφαλος, οι περισσότερες τριμμένες, άμμος στην κλίνη του πελάγους.

Wishes

Αυτό έμελλε να είναι το τελευταίο κείμενο που γράφτηκε το 2008 στον υπολογιστή της Ελληνικής Γωνιάς. Χρησιμοποιήθηκε ως πρωτοχρονιάτικη διακόσμηση.
This happens to be the last document for 2008 written at the desktop of the Greek Corner at the University of Jordan. It was used as our New Year's Eve decoration.

Εντέλει, μερικές κινήσεις ανθρωπιάς που επιτρέπουν ελπίδες: Στο Αμμάν ματαιώθηκαν τα ρεβεγιόν κι οι εορτασμοί της Πρωτοχρονιάς. Και στις 30 Δεκεμβρίου σχηματίστηκαν ουρές από πολίτες που έρχονταν στον Έβδομο Κύκλο να προσφέρουν τα χρειώδη (τρόφιμα, ρούχα, φάρμακα) για τις αυτοκινητοπομπές που θα προσπαθήσουν να φτάσουν στη Γάζα.
Finally some gestures of affinity, allow a tone of hope: In Amman all celebrations for the New Year were canceled and on December the 30th, there were queues of people offering necessaries (provisions, cloths, medicines) for Gaza.

Έγραφα σε φίλο, συνάδελφο, σήμερα, απαντώντας καθυστερημένα στις ευχές του. Τού'στελνα και τις δικές μου, έτσι καθώς η περισταση το ευνοεί: Σήμερα εισήλθαμε στο 1430 από Εγίρας (με διαδηλώσεις για το μακέλεμα της Γάζας). Σωτήριο θά'ναι κι αυτό, δεν μπορεί. Αφού είναι τόσο μουλιασμένο στο αίμα. Πρωτοχρονιά στον ύστερο μεσαίωνα.
Κάπου να τρίζει άραγε τη γραφίδα του κάποιος Πίκο ντελλά Μιράντολα ο Νέος με λόγια σαν κι ετούτα;
I once read that Abdala the Muslim, when asked what was most worthy of awe and wonder in this theater of the world, answered, "There is nothing to see more wonderful than man!" Hermes Trismegistus concurs with this opinion: "A great miracle, Asclepius, is man!" Comment:
May I ask who recalls the events in Jenin (a massacre starting on May 17th 2002)? May I ask who brings in mind the Israeli invasion in South Lebanon (July 2006)? I do ask these questions, because I have noticed such a praiseworthy intensive care about the clearance of and scrutiny about crimes committed during the 1990s, in other parts of the world (e.g. Balkans). And especially I am asking the young generation of the Arab countries, if they care to recall. The radios are festive these days with plenty of Christmas reminders, and "Destination Dance" calls.

Many Happy Returns

These days I am thinking of the petrified girl. That one that saw her sister embarking to the Empire of a Particular Ratio on a commercial vessel, with the required documents of an unholy matrimony. That one that might have paid attention to Makriyannis' feverish oration "for these we fight as well" (for the curved stones) during the 1820s. After 2500 years, they transfered her from the Rock of Acropolis to the nearby New Museum of Acropolis, the one that will be soon having restaurants with a balcony, spicy ticket prices and pale Le-Corbusier-imitating aesthetics. So the group of the girls hopefully will be protected from rain, snow, wind and sun, pollution and the noise of a 5 millions city. They were led, even if late, to the salon, these noble street girls, that saw the growth, the decline, the shrinking, the growth, the pompous baroque of history.
